THINK BROADER FOUNDATION Commends Undersecretary’s Accomplishments in Defense Department
March 14, 2016
(Washington, DC) The Think Broader Foundation, founded by former military officers, acknowledges the exceptional service provided by the Honorable Brad Carson, the serving Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and former Undersecretary of the Army.
Under Carson’s leadership, the Pentagon, as part of its efforts to embrace more family-friendly policies, developed the Force of the Future Initiative, which includes a cache of strategic policies to improve quality of family life in the Armed Forces.
This program updates anachronistic personnel policies that impeded Servicemember’s ability to balance work and life, offering innovative solutions to help reconcile personal and professional pursuits, such as the cryogenic freezing of reproductive egg and sperm for active-duty service members who want to preserve their fertility. The gruesome reality of injury to male and female Servicemembers’ pelvic region in current warzones validates the additional medical benefit. The Initiative also includes increased maternity leave, from six to 12 weeks; increased paternity leave, from 10 to 14 days; extended day-care hours; expanded adoption leave; and lactation rooms to be installed at more than 3,600 bases.
Carson has also been visionary in his pursuit of additional benefits for service-member education and professional development, including improving college internship programs, establishing a digital service to solve IT problems, launching an entrepreneur-in-residence program, expanding corporate fellows and career intermission programs, refining the new blended retirement system, piloting a new online talent management system, establishing a people analytics office, conducing troop exit surveys, studying poor recruit outcomes and implementing diversity briefings to senior leaders.
These changes are instrumental to promoting quality of life but also ensuring exceptional talent development and workforce management of our nearly 1.3 million active-duty troops, and about 800,000 reservists and 764,000 civilians.
We are grateful for visionary leaders like Mr. Brad Carson and thank him for his contributions to much-needed defense workforce management.
