Women Veteran’s “I SERVE” / “I SERVED” Campaign

Calling all women in the military and female veterans!

Join Lean in Military Women, Lean in Women Veterans and Think Broader Foundation for our first annual “I SERVE/SERVED” 

Veteran’s Day 2016 Campaign.

 

 

WHY?

We want to promote the diversity and celebrate the accomplishments of women who serve or have served!  Over 15% of the active force and 9% of the U.S. veteran population, or  2.2 million women, are veterans in the United States. Women are the largest growing sub-population of veterans today. While our visibility is growing, we would like to help bridge the civilian-military divide by continuing to build awareness of these amazing women in our local communities.

WHAT?

We’re inviting you to record a simple 15 second video, saying you served, or are still serving to help change the stereotypical (male) “face” of American veterans.

We are working with an informal coalition of over 20 women’s and veterans organizations to amplify your voices and profiles. Thank you for sharing our passion for women’s equality!

HOW?

We’ll all use the same script. This is for ease of use, and to keep a common theme, generating greater visibility.

“I’m (name), I served in the [USAF/Navy/Army/USMC/USCG].  This is what a veteran looks like.” (Pause) “I SERVED/SERVE”  

Please say the “I serve/d” slowly as we will be clipping this quote from each of you and adding to a 3 min PSA.

When your video is complete, just email it to IServedWomenVets@gmail.com and we’ll take it from there!

We are editing/consolidating these into one 3 minute PSA to be distributed nationally on Veteran’s Day 2016.

TIPS TO GET STARTED

1. Equipment: All you need is a phone that takes video and a tripod for a stable shot.
2. Keep it Brief: 15 seconds or less.
3. Rehearse: Rehearse a few times, to get comfortable with the process.
4. Set the Tone: Be proud! Be confident! Be you.
5. Consider location: We’re looking for a large cross section of our society. Film yourself in the gym, at your desk, in the aisle of the grocery store, at your children’s school, going through airborne school, at NASA, or the local coffee shop. Diversity!
6. Eye Contact and Gestures: Think of the camera as the conduit to your audience. Look directly into the lens as if you are connecting with the audience.
7. Be Grounded in your Strength: Before you begin, think of your authentic strength and where you draw your power from.  Hold yourself high!  Your body will respond by displaying a high level of confidence as you begin your video.
8. There’s no “Right Way”: Your video is an individual expression of you. Remember that there is no “right way” to make a video. Each one will be as beautifully unique as you are, and that’s our goal!
